Rose Thorns to Hands

By: Stackiewicz

From the storm I protrude

I am sharp

Please do be careful

I would hate to draw your life essence from you

to cause you pain

I cannot take it away

I can only give

but hands, do not brake me off of my rose

for I will be sharp with no purpose

and will not be able to protect my rose

yo hands

you are death to me

you are my poison

you and only you can kill my life force

the poison of your hands

will dry me out

brown all of my vibrant green.

but grip me

in return I will draw your life force

as you drain mine.

Celebrating the 100th Birthday of Frances H. Townes

On Saturday February 13, 2016 from Noon to 2:30, family and friends will gather at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley in celebration of Frances H Townes 100th Birthday!

This wonderful celebration will benefit one of Frances’ favorite charities, Youth Spirit Artworks, an interfaith “green” art jobs and job training program located in Berkeley, California which is committed to empowering homeless and low-income San Francisco Bay Area young people, ages 16-25.

Proceeds from tickets, gifts, and contributions will benefit the Frances H. Townes Mural and Bench. The funds will go toward a creation of a special Frances Townes Mosaic tile mural and bench at Youth Spirit Artworks. Longtime First Congregational church of Berkeley member and ceramic artist, Wesley Wright, is completing the tile, mural, and bench working with the leadership of seven YSA artists with community input this winter. To make a contribution you can donate via YSA’s website or mail a check made payable to YSA at 1740 Alcatraz Ave. Berkeley, CA 94703. Gifts in denominations of $100 are celebrated and encouraged.

Mediterranean cuisine prepared by the award winning chef, India Joze, will be served and the celebration will feature a Silent Auction including art from participants of Youth Spirit Artworks.

Sat. February 13th Noon to 2:30pm
First Congregational Church of Berkeley
2345 Channing Way
Berkeley, CA 94704

Tickets: $40

All donations will be matched 1:1 by a generous donor

Matching Grant to Help Homeless Youth

YSA has received a new matching grant that will make it possible for all gifts to Youth Spirit to be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000!

The gift is focused on building our collaboration with YEAH shelter providing jobs training for homeless youth indoors during el Nino. We have opened our doors from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm daily, for a total of up to 40 additional hours to keep youth safe. We are working hard to create 24/7 empowering and positive indoor space for youth this winter.

Donate today to help us reach our goal and continue providing spaces for our youth!

YSA Recipient of the 2015-2016 Chancellor’s Grant

Youth Spirit Artworks has been selected as a recipient of the University of California, Berkeley Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund. The grant is in the amount of $15,000, which will be used for their newest neighborhood improvement project, a Parklet and Artlot for the Lorin neighborhood.

Collaborating with Cal design students, YSA youth will engage new and long-time residents, exploring opportunities for art, entrepreneurship, and community building that value all Lorin residents. Goals include pedestrian safety, creation of a community parklet and spaces for art making and gathering. Documentation will include a How-To manual for future parklets in Berkeley, and a graphic booklet recording Lorin resident’s hopes and dreams for the upcoming Adeline Corridor Plan.

YSA hopes to create an expression of community, which will evolve into economic survival and public open spaces for community enjoyment. Along with Cal students, YSA youth will also be working with Geoffrey Holton and Associates as the primary architect and designer.
